Put extra energy into caring for plants and wildlife throughout August, and your garden will reap the rewards

Holiday season is here! Whether you're staying at home or venturing further Lafield, August is often seen as the idyllic month of drowsy bees and cocktails in the garden. The reality, due to climate change, is that August can be highly variable, with monsoon rains one day and blistering heat the next, so make your motto: 'Be prepared'.

If you're going away, move potted plants into one or two areas according to light needs, but generally out of direct sun. This helps them stay moist for longer, and shades them from scorching sunshine. If you are away for longer than a week, you may need to ask a neighbour to pop in and water your pots. Alternatively, use perforated hose or irrigation pipes on a timer, to water either early morning or late evening for the least evaporation.
