However, on hot summer days you will no doubt want some respite from the sunshine, and plants are an ideal way to create naturalistic shade. Start by deciding where you want to create a shady area. Take into consideration the soil conditions, how much maintenance you are prepared to do and, if you intend to grow plants in pots, how close you are to an outdoor water source for watering purposes.
