As the state gets ready for the Aeromart Hyderabad Summit, Mr. Praveen PA, Director, Aerospace & Defence, Govt. of Telangana speaks with Vishal Kashyap, Managing Editor, Aviation World, highlighting all the aspects that makes the state preferred place to invest in aerospace and defence.Excerpts...
Q: What are the major steps taken towards the aerospace development in the state of Telangana?
A: Government of Telangana has identified aerospace and defence as a thrust sector. While Hyderabad has been a defence hub for six decades now because all the large number of DRDO labs and the DPSUs like BDL, ECIL and in Private sector Adani, TATAS etc. are here. There has been a strong presence of MSMES who have been supplying components as well as doing various manufacturing for the defence side from Telangana. In the last decade, we have seen a large growth in the aerospace segment, started off with the Lockheed Martin Tata joint ventures, basically the Tata group which has kind of started off manufacturing and exporting from Hyderabad. Today, we have 90 per cent of Tata's defence manufacturing is from Hyderabad.
So, it started off originally with the JVs which came in with the Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, GE, etc as the defence and aerospace industry got a major shift during the last couple of years under the Atmanirbhar Bharat /Make In India initiative.
Under Make in India, a lot of parts and components and systems which used to be imported are now expected to be manufactured in the country and the ecosystem has the ability to kind of deliver it immediately. A lot of Hyderabad-based MSMEs could take on the benefit and be part of that Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence program. The other important touch points are:

HAL signs MoU with UAC Russia to produce SJ-100 Aircraft
