Anti-caste lawyer Kiruba Munusamy talks to RIDDHI DASTIDAR about overcoming the odds and battling the system on her way to the top
WHEN I ASK Kiruba Munusamy how she would like to be introduced, she deliberates momentarily, then resolutely states, “As a lawyer first. Then an Ambedkarite who is an anti-caste person. And someone who is very independent.”
Munusamy rose to prominence for her work on caste atrocity and discrimination cases, something which remains a primary focus after a career spanning a decade. Her professional roster is studded with highlights that include a petition to have a woman police constable in Karur, Tamil Nadu, reinstated after her dismissal following a medical examination that classified her as transgender, and the abolition of the casteist ‘Made Made Snana’ ritual in Tamil Nadu.
