Artist Devi Seetharam examines patriarchy in public spaces through the men we see and the women we don't.
On the face of it, Devi Seetharam's Brothers, Fathers and Uncles-arguably the most shared artwork from the 2023 Kochi-Muziris Biennale—records men in public spaces, underscoring the firm dominance of their feet, the erectness of their spine and the brazenness with which they prowl the streets. The painting, however, is about what has deliberately been left out of the frame: a poignant reflection on the insidious and often invisible workings of patriarchy.
