For this group of Broadway's most celebrated stars, the role of a lifetime isn't one that is performed onstage or gets much applause. But it might be the most meaningful of all.

Maybe you buy a table at a gala. Maybe you paint sets for your community theater’s run of Guys and Dolls. Maybe you drop a fiver in the red bucket in the theater lobby. Or you tell friends about an under-the-radar show they simply must rush to see. There are any number of ways to give back to the theatrical community near you—but the responsibility to do so doesn’t rest only with audiences. These five performers have found fame in multiple mediums, but they have found home on Broadway amid the tight-knit drama community in New York City. Fittingly, each has made a mission of giving back in ways both large and (seemingly) small, from launching scholarship funds and chairing boards to— you guessed it—holding a red bucket in the lobby. Here, some of the stage’s greatest stars share how they practice philanthropy in their community, and how doing so benefits us all. Everybody, rise!
