TECH A MINUTE

Where cutting-edge engineering meets runway-ready designs—watches enhanced by technology are having their moment, from harnessing the power of the sun to using revolutionary materials.
Legendary designer Gerald Genta once said: “For me, watches are the antithesis of liberty. I am an artist, a painter; I hate having to adhere to the constraints of time.”
The paradox? He was the mastermind behind Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and OMEGA’s Constellation—iconic timepieces coveted by collectors for half a century.
Genta’s work proves that good design is what speaks to the heart. While we do pay attention to movements and complications, especially in a digital age where technology is rapidly evolving, aesthetics are still key when deciding which timepiece is worth the splurge.
And this sentiment is shared by the founders of local watch club TickTockBelles, Stephanie Soh and Deborah Wong.
“The appearance of the dial is important to me, followed by the shape and size of the watch head. It’s also the story behind the design of the watch that captivates me—a good, intricate movement is a bonus for me,” says Soh.Wong adds: “From my perspective, many heritage brands choose to invest more into aesthetics than just movements. Particularly, when they design with women in mind.”
Technological advancements are no longer confined to the gears, bridges, escapements, et cetera, within. Manufactures are finding that sweet spot between technicality and form. They are proudly showing it on dials and cases, some even merging it with the calibre, which ultimately reiterates that a watch is more than a time-telling device—it is a work of art.
STAR POWERSolar-powered movements are hardly new. However, gone are the days when they could only be found in utilitarian and chunky sports watches that screamed practicality with barely a whisper of style.
