Award-winning filmmaker Joshua Kerr remade his childhood Super 8 zombie short into a stunning apocalyptic epic using only an iPhone and AI-powered virtual production tools, completing the shoot in just one day without a crew or studio.

This project showcases how accessible tools like Jetset, Marble, and Beeble AI are democratizing high-end filmmaking, shifting focus from budget constraints to pure creative imagination.
With nothing but an iPhone and cutting edge AI tools, former Newcastle upon Tyne Super 8 child filmmaker and now award-winning filmmaker Joshua Kerr has transformed his nostalgic zombie backyard short into an apocalyptic masterpiece. His once nostalgic backyard zombie turned into an advanced wasteland glowing with fallout skies, 3D demons, and laser-shooting combat with all elements coming together with no traditional crew or studio.
Kerr utilized World Labs' Marble Gaussian splat generator and Google Gemini for HDRI apocalyptic variation; Kerr used Lightcraft's Jetset for real-time iPhone virtual production; He used Beeble AI for relighting seamless day-to-night and final composition within Unreal Engine. The proof-of-concept that Kerr is speaking of was achieved with a mix of fast and cost-effective alternative production methods which only cost a day worth of shooting. “It’s amazing what a single filmmaker can do today when given the right tools,” Kerr said. “Entire worlds of your imagination can be created with ease and control and applied to shoots with low resource costs and great outcomes post production.”
Kerr's last words from the last quote perfectly crystallizes the reasoning and results of the experiments. The “democratizing tools” Kerr speaks of is a shift targeting with net positive results. The specific net positive Kerr speaks of is the disassemble of what targets should be achievable and replace it with unrestricted imagination. The final iteration from Kerr's quote to the last paragraph shows that the “blockbuster” production target is no longer the “Can I afford this?” but “What do I want to create?”This story is from the February 2026 edition of Digital Studio.
