The sensor that could cut rare earths from EV motors
Manufacturing Today
|July 2025
Continental's new EV motor sensor could reduce rare earth use and boost performance leading to reshaping EV motor design.
-
The e-Motor Rotor Temperature Sensor (eRTS) technology from Continental provides a more accurate alternative to algorithm-based heat projections in permanent magnet synchronous motors used in electric vehicles (EVs). By reducing the tolerance from 15°C to just 3°C, this innovation allows for a more efficient use of rare earth elements and enhances vehicle performance.
Bin Huo, head of the Passive Safety and Sensorics (PSS) segment, stated, “This innovation confirms that our investment in resources and expertise at our E-Mobility Sensors product centre was a wise choice. We will continue to expand our EV sensor portfolio progressively.”
