THE RISE OF DIGITAL WAREHOUSING: TRANSFORMING SUPPLY CHAINS IN INDIA AND BEYOND
Logistics & SCM
|September 2025
Driven by the e-commerce boom, 15-minute deliveries, and rising consumer expectations, the shit towards digitisation promises speed, precision, and resilience
In an era defined by rapid technological advancement and shifting consumer behaviors, digital warehousing has emerged as a cornerstone of modern supply chains. Digital warehouses integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and real-time data analytics to optimise operations, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs. Unlike traditional warehouses, which rely heavily on manual processes and static inventory management, digital warehouses are dynamic ecosystems that predict demand, automate tasks, and provide unprecedented visibility across the supply chain.
The global smart warehousing market, a key subset of digital warehousing, is projected to grow from USD 31.21 billion in 2025 to USD 46.42 billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 8.3 per cent. This expansion is driven by the need for faster fulfillment, especially in e-commerce and just-in-time manufacturing.
In India, the warehousing market is experiencing even more explosive growth. Valued at approximately USD 14.26 billion in 2024, it is expected to reach USD 34.60 billion by 2030, with a CAGR of around 15.9 per cent. Additionally, the total warehousing space in India is forecasted to hit 1.2 billion square feet by 2027, growing at 15 per cent annually, fueled by the e-commerce boom, rising disposable incomes, and government initiatives like the National Logistics Policy.
That said, the question remains that will the digital transformation addresses efficiency challenges particularly in the Indian context where supply chains are evolving rapidly to meet the demands of a "want it now" economy.
