BUILDING SAFER PORTS FOR RESILIENT TRADE

In an era where global trade hinges on the seamless operation of seaports, the digital backbone supporting these hubs has become a prime target for cybercriminals.

Ports handle over 80 per cent of international merchandise trade, processing billions of tons of cargo annually and facilitating trillions in economic value. From container cranes guided by automated systems to supply chain logistics orchestrated via interconnected networks, the maritime sector's reliance on technology has transformed ports into critical infrastructure nodes.

Yet, this digitisation exposes them to unprecedented cyber vulnerabilities. As of December 2025, the maritime industry faces a surge in attacks, driven by geopolitical tensions and the low barrier to entry for sophisticated threats. With attacks escalating—ransomware incidents alone rose 80 per cent in 2023 and continued their upward trajectory into 2025—the stakes could not be higher.

imageRISING INSTANCES OF CYBER ATTACKS

The past two years have witnessed a barrage of cyber incidents that underscore ports’ fragility. In August 2024, the Port of Seattle suffered a ransomware attack that disrupted operations, forcing the shutdown of key systems and delaying cargo handling for days.

The port's incident response team isolated affected networks, but the breach highlighted the sector’s exposure to extortion tactics.

Just weeks earlier, on August 6, 2024, the Cyber Army of Russia—a pro-Russian hacktivist group affiliated with NoName057—launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on the UK’s Port of Felixstowe, one of Europe's busiest container terminals. The assault overwhelmed servers, causing temporary halts in vessel berthing and cargo processing.
