What Makes a Winning Bartender?

Bartending is no longer just about mixing drinks. It's about creating a meaningful impact, one glass at a time, believes Devi Singh, winner of the Camikara Millionaire Bartender Challenge 2025.

What Makes a Winning Bartender?

Over the past decade, bartending has undergone a remarkable transformation—from a late-night job behind a counter to a globally recognised culinary profession. Today's bartenders are no longer just drink slingers—they're being celebrated as 'liquid chefs,' crafting complex flavour profiles with the same intent, technique and creativity as top-tier kitchen chefs.

The evolution is visible everywhere: From dedicated mixology schools and beverage certifications to the growing number of bars that appear on the World's 50 Best lists. Bartenders today are expected to understand the molecular structure of ingredients, master sustainability practices like zero-waste garnishing and even develop their own house-made infusions. New-age terms like 'flavour architect', 'bar chef', and 'beverage curator' have emerged, reflecting how deeply specialised and creatively demanding the profession has become. Bartending is no longer a stepping stone—it's a destination.
