Why So Many Institutional Leaders Just Won't Let Go
BW Businessworld
|July 26, 2025
ACROSS INDIA'S social institutions – trusts, foundations, cultural bodies, academic societies, cooperatives, and mission-driven boards – there is a question that rarely surfaces in formal meetings, yet echoes quietly in corridors: What happens after the leader?
These institutions are often built and sustained by remarkable individuals who have given years, sometimes lifetimes, to their cause. Their vision, dedication, and credibility have held things together through change, volatility, and enormous social transition. We owe them not just gratitude but deep respect.
And yet, a difficult truth must be said with care. Many of these institutions struggle to transition into the future - not because of external threats, but because of how tightly leadership is held. The hesitation to plan for succession is not about oversight or malice. It is often born out of deep emotional investment. The institution becomes synonymous with the individual. Letting go feels like letting it all unravel.
Most leaders today are in their sixties or seventies. Many sincerely believe that unless a younger version of themselves – just as committed, just as wise - steps forward, the institution is better off as it is. This belief, while understandable, may be holding back the very legacy they wish to protect.
This is not a conversation about age. This does not have bias against age. It is a conversation about governance, about foresight, and about stewardship. Institutions that wish to endure must think in terms of systems, not only individuals. Succession planning is strongest when it is done well before it is needed - quietly, deliberately, and with trust.
