Beyond bills and bed charges lie the hidden costs of safety, innovation, and infrastructure that shape healthcare pricing

THE TRUE PRICE OF HOSPITAL CARE

India’s healthcare system serves the vast population of the world’s largest populous nation, scattered across urban and rural areas, but also frequently fulfils the needs of third-world countries, with relatively affordable cost and easier access. And yet, in India and much of the world, the cost of in-hospital care remains misinterpreted and complex. Let us try to unpack the myths and realities for a realistic understanding.

Myth: Hospitals overcharge because they want to

Truth: While it is easy to eternally blame the hospitals for alleged 'overcharging,' there is a need to understand a deeply layered financial model.

Great care is expensive to deliver. Not because hospitals want it, but because safety, quality, and readiness for the unexpected involve cost. Hospital pricing is shaped by a nonlinear cost structure, beyond the visible services like surgeries or room stays and highly trained doctors. There are elements like emergency readiness, 24x7 power backup, advanced infection control, equipment and infrastructure (ICUs, advanced imaging units), all necessary for high-quality care.

Myth: Price = cost + profit

Truth: Healthcare pricing is often oversimplified - reduced to a transactional equation of service cost plus margin. But this supermarket-style view of healthcare involving human beings is misleading.
