A charter to remember...

March 2025

Chartering a yacht can make for the holiday of a lifetime, but it's worth knowing what to expect so that you can pick the right one for you. The sailing area, expected conditions, kind of boat, and level of support you want while away can make all the difference for you and your crew. Picking something that is within your budget and level of experience will reduce stress for everyone. Having said that, most good companies can provide as much or as little suport as you want, so that you can achieve more than you might at first believe, especially with a skipper on board, or as part of a flotilla. Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Happy planning!

A charter to remember...

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

WHAT KIND OF CHARTER?

There are many ways to charter and every company will do things slightly differently. If you’ve never sailed before, it’s worth getting some instruction in a stunning location – many companies offer courses. If that sounds too much like hard work, a skippered charter will let you sit back and relax. If you’re ready to spread your wings a little, a flotilla gives you independence but with the guidance and support of a lead crew. A bareboat charter will let you go it alone, albeit with help on call if needed. Some companies can supply a skipper for a day or two while you get your confidence up. To go the whole hog, a luxury charter might include a skipper, crew, hosts and catering for ultimate relaxation, at a cost.

WHERE TO GO?

The choice of destinations can be baffling. Start by narrowing down where and when you think you want to go, and what you’re going for. For the full experience and proper sunshine, pick your chosen area’s high season, but if heat and crowds aren’t your thing, the ‘shoulder’ seasons can offer real bargains. Some areas, such as the Seychelles, offer year-round charter, while the Med tends to shut down for winter. The Caribbean or Thailand is worth considering if it’s winter sun you’re after.

Pick somewhere to suit your whole crew. Oceanic islands with consistent trade winds offer great sailing, but might feel a bit exposed for inexperienced crew, while Mediterranean coastlines vary in the amount of wind and shelter. Mornings are often calm, getting windy later.

BENETEAU OCEANIS 47

If volume is your thing, the Beneteau Oceanis 47 has bags of it. Sharing a similar hull to the Finot Conq lines of the previous Oceanis 46.1, the 4.5m of beam and full-length chine carries the volume both all the way aft, and a long way forward. This gives room for multiple layout options, from three cabins and two heads for the owner version, up to four cabins and four heads, or five cabins and three heads. For a boat of this size, it's notable that the forward bulkhead is relatively far aft, almost to the mast support, giving a huge amount of space to the forward cabin(s).
