BEEMERS BOOZE AND BURN-OUTS...BMW MOTORRAD DAYS 2023

Up until 2021, BMW’s premier motorcycling event – that’s now in its 21st year–had been held in fields in the Alps, on the outskirts of the picture-postcard town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The beer was flowing, the bands were playing, and every so often you’d hear a bike on a limiter, moments away from detonating. It was the consummate motorcycling party, with the cultural twist of sauerkraut and lederhosen thrown in for good measure. For me, and the tens of thousands who made the pilgrimage each year, it was arguably the best piss-up outside of Oktoberfest, made all the sweeter by an abundance of great roads to ride and picturesque places to pass the time while your hangover was at its worst.

It was a very homely place that welcomed BMW owners from all over the world for the best part of two decades, but it had also had its time, so the decision was taken for the event to move to Berlin, where a new chapter could be forged on the streets of the nation’s capital. Well, when I say on the streets, I mean at the Messe, which is probably best described as a towering events hall, smack in the heart of Berlin, surrounded by woods and fields, in contradiction to what you’d expect. It is about as far removed from an Alpine scene as is imaginable, yet that’s not to say it’s not exceptional in its own right. But more on that later, as my story actually begins on the far side of the capital, in an area known as Spandau.

MV UNLEASHES ITS BRUTALE SERIE ORO

MV Agusta has marked its claim on the middleweight naked class with the arrival of the all-new Brutale Serie Oro. At its core sits the brand-new 950 EVO triple, a snarling, counter-rotating crank masterpiece pumping out 148bhp at 11,200rpm and 107Nm at 8400rpm. Even better, 85% of that shove is on tap from 3500rpm... proper road-riding grunt. With finger-followers, revised cam profiles and optimised cooling and lubrication, MV says it's stronger, smoother and – dare we say it – more reliable than any Brutale before it.

BMW'S BABY GS

Let's face it, not everyone wants a whopping big adventure bike in their life, and BMW gets that more than most. It's probably the core reason it's unleashed the new F 450 GS - a bike aimed squarely at the booming A2 adventure market, which drags a hefty dose of R 1300 GS design swagger into the 48hp class. With its unmistakable GS beak, X-shaped LED running light and slim, racy tail, the baby GS looks every inch the younger sibling of BMW's flagship bruiser.

OLIVER LONGTERMER SUZUKI GSX-R125

Another month into winter and the cold weather is not holding me back just yet. Despite the painfully icy winds, I have been out just as much as my I did in the warmer months, though with the help of layered clothes. The GSX-R125 continues to deliver more excitement, learning curves, and head turns - even after three months of riding.
