Readers share their most unforgettable hummingbird snapshots
-
After visiting a photographer’s backyard bird paradise, I was inspired to create my own hummingbird haven. I researched nectar-rich flowers that thrive in Washington and planted them in 14-inch pots that I strategically placed for perfect lighting and background composition. This scene caught my attention as this Anna’s hummingbird sipped salvia nectar while unknowingly playing pollinator, collecting pollen on its head and bill. Look closely, and you'll spot tiny specks of pollen floating as the bird flits around. It was nature’s little magic moment!

The bird sanctuary in my backyard is managed by four or five hummingbirds who take their job very seriously. I have developed a special bond with these tiny winged wonders. Not only do they pose for portraits almost daily, they also play the role of facilitators. If a new bird appears in the backyard and is unusually shy, I ask one of the hummingbirds to speak to the new guest to see if it would be willing to sit for a portrait. As of yet, not a single one of my hummingbird friends has failed with these requests.Gary Gruber BERMUDA DUNES, CA
Last April, I took this photo in Sierra Vista, Arizona. It’s a male Anna’s hummingbird, which happened to sit still on the sugar-water feeder with just the right light, showing off a full kaleidoscope of colors—from green to yellow to orange and that signature bright pink. Usually, I only catch the Anna’s pink glow. But this time, the angle and lighting worked their magic, giving me a rare rainbow moment.Matthew Cooke EWING, NJ
