CONTEMPORARY FICTION

- JULIET REDIEN

Scary Monsters by Michelle de Kretser, Allen & Unwin

In a unique format, Michelle de Kretser presents two novels in one, both dealing with a clutch of “scary monsters” ranging from racism to ageism, to sexism and more. There is no prescribed order to read the two tales, simply dive in, read to the middle and then flip the book for a second story. It’s an intriguing concept and although the plots are unrelated they are linked. “The two main characters in the novel are migrants, and migration turns lives upside down. The format reflects that,” Michelle tells The Weekly.
