The qualifier has to be used because the Ferns had been crowned world champions that year, while the All Blacks had drawn their series with the British Lions.

The only real contender to challenge the Ferns were the Crusaders, but the judges rightly came to the conclusion that winning a World Cup outranked winning Super Rugby.
