Gary Chillingworth answers another reader’s question this month regarding setting up a back garden range

At Home On The Range

Over the last few months, we have looked at shooting in the garden and have built a few targets to do so, but last week I had an email from a shooter who asked, ‘Gary, How do I go about setting up a home range? What sort of targets should I buy? Where can I get them from? What are the advantages over the different kinds?’

I love emails like this because it simply means that I don’t have to do that much thinking about what to write about and can just get on with answering the questions, so, please, I beg you, as I’m 50 years old in July and my brain is gradually turning to mush, please email me with any questions you have and make my life a little bit easier!

The question about the type of targets to have is a good one; there is a huge number of different options out there, and they all have their place in the shooting world. The question is, though, what do you want from a target? Do you want something that will help you improve your shooting, a target that is just fun to shoot, or something that will just give you a backstop, so that you can blast away all day safe in the knowledge that your pellet will remain in your garden?

To answer this, let’s have a look at what sort of targets are on the market, what they will do for the shooter, and where to get them.

THE PRACTICE TARGET
