Miami pulls out all the stops during Art Basel, even if some punters don’t know where the show is.
Take a stroll outside the air-conditioned corridors of Art Basel Miami Beach and you may see the following: a green and orange spray-painted Ferrari, a bar serving trays of Jell-O shots, and a poodle with a gold plated collar. Miami is a city of flamboyant juxtapositions and these days its reputation for beach bling exists peaceably alongside its emerging position as international hub for art and design.
This is especially true each December, when the world’s most influential designers, gallerists, enthusiasts and collectors gather for Art Basel and attend everything from commercial projects to cultural programming. After 15 years in Miami Beach, the week has become host to over 20 satellite fairs and seemingly countless launches, receptions, parties, exhibitions and performances to the point where it is not uncommon for people to go to Art Basel and not actually attend the fair, or even comprehend where or what it actually is.
