Salon International|March 2021
Since March 2020, India has been impacted by the deadly Coronavirus. The beauty industry was hit hardest because of the nature of work and resultantly, several salons and spas had to face closure. The segment which saw smooth sailing was online education, as now the academies used various platforms as an opportunity to address more students and include more courses

ASK ACADEMY

MELISSA HUGHE, NATIONAL TECHNICAL HEAD, SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL

Effect of the pandemic on your academy: The pandemic has positively accelerated the digital transformation of our educational offerings and increased our outreach manifold. It has allowed us to reach out to hairstylists based in the remote corners of our country, facilitating access and helping us even connect with them across the globe. This has replaced our brick and mortar academy usage and physical training to virtual webinars and live streaming sessions.

Effect of the pandemic on students: Students have had to learn the new language of this digital world and adjust their learning methods. The key criterion for students is to maintain focus and balance time between work and study.

Alternate form of teaching: ASK Academy has been conducting webinars, live streaming sessions, face-to-face visits and in-salon trainings.

Finding success: We have experienced a successful and agile adaptation of the new methods by both our internal team and students who have now learnt to function eficiently in the new normal.

Challenges being faced: While we have adapted well to the new methods, there are constant challenges that need to be met with to make our practices more engaging, more interactive and more relevant to the times. Since large gatherings are still a restriction, training dissemination techniques have evolved and continue as Phygital trainings (part physical, part digital) with smaller groups.

Opportunities now available: We see a great opportunity to support the industry with educational content available at the click of anger, content that is relevant, informative, usable and enjoyable! We definitely see ‘Edutainment’ as an emerging trend.

Courses being offered: ASK has a wholesome approach towards education requirements and provides courses to strengthen the four key pillars of hairdressing – coloration, hair care, texture and styling. To complement this, we continue our offerings via creative and advanced training, and to complete the circle, we also have courses to enhance soft skills on consultation, retail excellence and business. We also support our partners via a customisable approach and tailor our education programmes to t their team requirement. In addition, we regularly update them on new trends, techniques and services.

View of the faculty on online teaching: The faculty has embraced digital transformation with agile adaptation and new coordination requirements. Teaching online has been an ever-evolving process and the faculty continues to learn new ways to improve their training programmes.

Advantage of online classes: The advantage is definitely the ability to have a much larger outreach without the compulsion to travel.

Disadvantage of online classes: Primarily, the loss of human intimacy and interaction. Also, we need to develop shorter and more engaging content for improved focus and impact. Striking a balance between attending online sessions, work and other activities is a challenge.

Future of online education: The future is definitely bright, and both online teaching and learning are here to stay. We have experienced its evolution and will continue to see its growth in the times to come. Balancing it with face-to-face interactions at intervals will also continue and evolve.

Effect of the pandemic on your academy: The pandemic has been a great opportunity to make our presence felt on digital platforms. Online education has increased the business manifold and the reach of the academy now across the globe.

Effect of the pandemic on students: When students have the zeal to learn, they can do so from any platform and our students have adapted to it well. They use online platforms like Zoom and Google Meet and haved learned even more than they could when they were visiting the academy.

Alternate form of teaching: We have launched small courses to learn at home like Aroma Therapy, Naturopathy, Thyroid Management, and a few more.

Finding success: It has been beyond our imagination! Even in our dreams we had not thought that we will nd so much successs like we have.

Challenges being faced: Initially, it was tough as the students were not friendly and could not adapt to the platform, but after a few days they learned the process with the help of the social media, and then it was a blessing.
