2020 Releases You Should Read

2020 saw many interesting releases, but reading all of them is not possible for bookworms busy juggling work life and housework. Also, the multitude of options may make it difficult for you to choose only a few to add to your personal collection. We put together a list of some titles that were praised by book lovers and critics to help make it easier for you –

Beach Read by Emily Henry

This may seem like fluff at first but there is a lot going on underneath the seemingly innocent title. The story revolves around Augustus and January, both are writers but they are polar opposites. What brings them together is that they live in neighbouring beach houses and both of them are suffering from writers block. So, they try and come up with a plan to help each other write again. The book is not a conventional romance. It is also about dealing with loss and grieving for a loved one. It is beautifully written and will definitely want to make you want to read it again once you are on the last page.

Intimations by Zadie Smith

The pandemic has been brutal but it has also given birth to some thought-provoking writings and that is exactly what you will find in this book. The writer puts down her thoughts in the form of essays about the lockdown and what changes took place in her neighbourhood when people were forced to spend all their time indoors. It also brings up important topics such as the murder of George Floyd and the racism that can be seen and felt across America and the rest of the world. It is a book that will move you, and make you ponder on the crazy times that we are living in.

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
