Right now, the whole world is abuzz with the term ‘gender equality’. Even though gender quality is aimed at the upliftment of the society as a whole, there is a lot of negative feedback linked to the terminology. This is because many misunderstand it as giving more importance to girls and women, or giving them special rights and liberties. But in fact, it is not that at all. Gender equality is more about ensuring that everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities, regardless of gender. Even State governments are starting to understand the importance of gender equality. Recently Manipur took a monumental step by introducing the first ever Gender Budget statement in the State Assembly.

I don’t precisely remember how I joined Ramakrishna Mission School (RKMS), Aalo in 1966, but I do remember trudging 3 kms, one way, along with my elder sibling late Jarbom Gamlin – yes, the one who was in ‘politics’ and became the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh in 2011 - to attend school. I was born with six toes in my right leg – so, could never wear a pair of shoes until I got the extra toe surgically removed in January 1974 for my entry to Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun (which I have spoken about in my previous ‘piece’), and perforce, I used to wear slippers to school.
