SIR HOWARD HODGKIN’S love of India arose from his love of Indian Mughal art. Of this, he had a world-class collection, begun when a schoolboy at Eton, where he was encouraged by the art master, Wilfrid Blunt. It was the pursuit of Mughal art that first took him to India, in 1964, and he loved the country at first sight. An Indian visit became an annual event.
