There's something magical about stumbling across a kitchen garden in this part of the world—a deserted island paradise in Indonesia’s remote Anambas archipelago. Much of the planting at Bawah Reserve has been achieved through trial and error, working out what can and cannot survive the tropical and sometimes testing conditions.
This slow and steady approach has been employed on all six islands, 12 beaches and three lagoons of Bawah, and the resort is in a constant state of evolution. In early 2020, Elang Island will open, offering even more privacy and the option of exclusive use.
The cluster of garden and overwater bungalows on the main island was built without heavy machinery, to avoid damaging the land and mature island flora—some of the trees are believed to be about 2,000 years old.
