The Soul of a Wedding

After dabbling in photography in college as a biotechnology student, he knew his calling was in the arts. He experimented with film, and then went on to study film production in Australia. After he shot his friend’s wedding, it was no looking back for him. His journey as a wedding photographer began, and today he has become one of the most sought after wedding photographers in the country. We talk to Sudeep Bhattacharya this month, to find out about his distinctive narrative style, the changing wedding photography scene, and his focus on creating stories that last a lifetime.

Sudeep Bhattacharya has not been a stranger to the world of arts. From a very young age, he has been writing short stories, and painting. His earliest memory of inheriting the first camera was a film Pentax ME Super, that his dad shot with in his youth. While pursuing a Bachelor’s in Biotechnology, he was still dabbling in photography in college, shooting a few rolls with a friend’s Nikon FM2. It wasn’t until much after post graduation, that he felt that his professional calling was in the arts. However, he was clueless where to begin. “I had no one in my family or social circle that I knew that was a full-time creative professional. So this switch involved a leap of faith.” Through college and after, he had been freelancing as a copywriter, while actively playing music in a few bands, sketching with charcoal, and taking pictures. He found film to be a perfect medium at the time, as it is a great amalgamation of visual and aural arts with writing, and after taking some time off to create a portfolio to apply with, he moved to Australia to pursue a Master’s in Film Production. “It was these initial years though film school, and after, working as an indie writer-director that I had early lessons in what it means to be a full time artist, and how to overcome creative challenges round the clock.”
