In Conversation With Sou Fujimoto
Elle Decor India
|April - May 2017
The Japanese visionary’s commitment to constant reinvention and an ideology that architecture and materials should reflect forms found in nature, make him one of the most revered names of our time
Just like any child who is passionate about science, the young Sou Fujimoto too looked up to Albert Einstein and wanted to grow up to be a physicist...to find order in complexities and fully harmonise a jumbled world. He even formally studied the discipline at the University of Tokyo in 1994 but gradually found himself gravitating towards his childhood love for making different kinds of objects – creating, even if on a whim. While researching legends like Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, he discovered that his scientific skills and knowledge could be implemented in something technical and innovative at the same time, like structures and habitats. “I wanted to change the concept of architecture completely, just like Einstein did in the world of physics,” says Sou.
