There are two types of peptic ulcers, where the name of the ulcer refer to the location where it is found. The common types are :

Gastric ulcers i Duodenal ulcer

A Gastric ulcers are located in the stomach whereas duodenal ulcers are found at the beginning of the small intestine. There are chances that a person may have both of these ulcers at the same time.

CAUSE OF PEPTIC ULCER :

Peptic ulcers happen when the acid that helps you digest food damage the wall of stomach or duodenum. Ulcer is the end result of an imbalance between digestive fluids in the stomach and duodenum. The most common cause of Peptic ulcers is due to infection caused by helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria or by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Over drinking and smoking also at times lead to cause ulcers. Stress and spicy food does not cause ulcer but make the condition worst.

SIGNS & SYMPTOM OF PEPTIC ULCER :

An ulcer may or may not have symptoms. The most common peptic ulcer symptom is burning stomach pain. Stomach acids make the pain worst when the stomach is empty. The pain can be relieved by eating certain foods that buffer stomach acids or by taking acid reducing medications. Nearly three-quarter of people do not any kind of symptoms. When symptoms occur they may include: ï‚— Burning pain in the middle or the upper stomach ï‚— Bloating and abdominal fullness ï‚— Nausea and copious vomiting ï‚— Heartburn ï‚— Loss of appetite and weight loss ï‚— Hematemesis(vomiting of blood), this occurs due to bleeding directly from gastric ulcer ï‚— Melena(foul smelling feces due to presence of oxidized iron from hemoglobin) The symptoms of peptic ulcers may vary with location of ulcer and patient’s age. Typically ulcers tend to heal and recur and as a result pain may occur for few days and then may disappear. Usually children and elderly people don’t have any symptoms unless complications have risen.

COMPLICATIONS IN ULCERS :

Internal bleeding : Bleeding can occur as slow blood loss that leads to anemia or as severe blood loss that may require hospitalization or a blood transfusion. Severe blood loss may cause black or bloody vomit or black or bloody stools.

Infection : Peptic ulcers can eat a hole through (perforate) the wall of your stomach or small intestine, putting you at risk of serious infection of your abdominal cavity (peritonitis).
