Gurpreet Khaira, 76 years old, having retired as a principal from Government College Derabassi in 2000 and earlier having been a lecturer of Psychology for 34 years in various colleges in Kurukshetra, Patiala, GCG 11 Chandigarh, has been a source of inspiration not just for her students but also for the society.
Blessed with a beautiful family of three children, two daughters and a son and an extremely loving and supporting husband, Gurpreet shares her soul striking journey in fighting against cancer.
You were diagnosed with breast cancer how did you react when the doctor told you that you had cancer?
After retiring, I had plans of doing social service in my free time, but fate had something else in store for me. After I got my biopsy done and the reports came out positive it felt like I was hit by a bomb shell. It was indeed a very shocking and a painful news, not only because of the dreadful nature of the disease, but because there had been no family history. Soon I composed myself and delivered the news to my husband and two daughters. I concealed the news from my son, who at that time was studying in USA. It was shattering news for all the family members.
What made you go to the doctor?
My daughter is working in a private hospital in Chandigarh. She kept insisting, I get a mammogram done and I kept on ignoring her pleads as I had no symptoms. Finally on 28th December, 2000 I went to Inscol for my checkup. I was pretty sure the report would come negative, as I am really particular about my diet and I exercise regularly and go for walks.
