If your current beauty goals include chiselled cheeks or brows on fleek, surprise: Instagram has hijacked your look. Beauty’s new social language (from contouring to strobing) has familiarised even casual scrollers with some really sophisticated beauty techniques. It’s even influenced the products that end up in your make-up bag. Sales of prestige cosmetics, contouring creams, and powders—once the stuff of stage performers and supermodels—more than tripled in the first eight months of 2015 (the latest data available), exceeding $29 million, according to The NPD Group. (Two million Insta photos are currently hashtagged #Contour.) In addition, brow products are up by 29 percent, and lip liner by 13 percent— surprising for a product that’s been on life support post- ’90s. Last month, Urban Decay more than doubled its range of lip pencils, now offering 50 colours that’ll overline (see also: Kylie-fy) your pout.
