LUXURY AHOY!
If a hotel on water floats your boat, you can’t go past Edinburgh’s Fingal in Scotland, a retired lighthouse tender and now sister ship of the former royal yacht Britannia (which has been refurbished and is docked nearby for visitors to tour). The Fingal has been given a $9.5 million makeover into a boutique five-star hotel with 23 guest cabins, each named after one of the lighthouses it once supplied. The decor is warm and inviting art deco, reflecting the Fingal’s famous shipmate, and many of the fittings are original. Princess Anne (patron of the Northern Lighthouse Board) reportedly has her own suite on board! All of the amenities you’d expect from a top hotel are available – open space on deck for sunbathing, a restaurant serving Scottish-inspired cuisine, and the sophisticated Lighthouse bar supplies cocktails and canapés.
