WHAT IS IT?
Intermittent fasting comes in various guises but the two most popular are the 16:8 diet, where followers eat all their meals within an eight-hour window and fast for the other 16 hours, and the 5:2 diet, where you restrict your food intake to a maximum of 2000kJ (500 cals) on two non-consecutive days and eat normally the other five.
WHO DOES IT SUIT?
It can be effective for people who have erratic schedules or dine out a lot, as well as those who shun breakfast. Research shows it may also contribute to reduced inflammation and increased brain function.
TIP Other pluses from intermittent fasting include upping your immune function and lowering blood pressure.
YOU MAY STRUGGLE IF…
Intermittent fasting isn’t recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, the elderly, athletes, children, underweight people or those with certain medical issues. Stop if you get dizzy.
