Jacqueline Fernandez On Her Journey To Stardom
Hi!BLITZ|January 2017

Diplomatic to a fault and not one to ruffle feathers, the gorgeous Jacqueline Fernandez has made firm inroads into Bollywood in just seven years, always laughing and flashing her 100-watts smile for the camera. But, in an interview with Farhad J Dadyburjor, the actress says that it is this very positivity that has been the most misunderstood thing about her, whilst also talking about the hardships of her journey in Bollywood as an outsider and her plans for soon opening a restaurant in Mumbai.

Farhad J Dadyburjor

It was really 2014’s Kick that shot Jacqueline Fernandez into the stratosphere of mega stardom, and since then the actress has clearly been feeling the pressure of trying to match that kind of success. While last year saw her in three fairly well received performances—Dishoom, Housefull 3, A Flying Jatt, this year holds much promise with Jacqueline making her English language film debut in According to Mathew and starring opposite Sidharth Malhotra in Reloaded and Varun Dhawan in Judwaa 2. We caught up with the Sri Lankan stunner to find out more during her favourite time of the year—spending the Christmas holidays with her family in Colombo…

It seems to be one big happy family reunion for you in Colombo. What are your plans for Christmas and will you be cooking anything traditional like turkey or Christmas cake?

I plan on being with my family. My brother is flying down from Australia and we are all going to spend it in Sri Lanka because the rest of our family is here and it’s always just a lot of fun because there are so many activities and things to do like sailing, beaches and trekking…that’s how we enjoy spending our Christmas. But as long as we are together we can have fun anywhere in the world!

You’ve said that you wanted a pair of solitaire earrings in your Santa stocking. Isn’t that a bit ‘rich’ in these demonetisation times?

So, I had mentioned solitaire earrings in my stockings but I think that was more of just a joke because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to own but I’ve never actually had the guts to do it…so if it came as a present, then it’s all inviting.

Speaking of demonetisation, how inconvenienced were you by it?

We had to keep withdrawing money from the bank every day, and more than anything my staff faced inconvenience as well. But we all knew it was short term inconvenience and in the long run everyone will have a major advantage by it.

As a complete outsider, you’ve managed to make a strong name for yourself in Bollywood over the last seven years. What would you say has been the most difficult part of your journey so far? Also, do you think it was much harder for you not being a star kid?
