AN EPITOME OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND ICONIC VIEWS: BORA BORA

From amazing lagoon and water excursions to fun and adventurous land activities, Bora Bora is the perfect place to be outdoors and witness the captivating beauty of the island. This French Polynesia’s leading lady is undoubtedly the most celebrated island in the South Pacific Ocean. This island lies northwest of Tahiti, less than an hour away by plane from Papeete. Its airport is located on a small, separate part of the island known as Motu Mete.

During ancient times, the island was referred to as “poraporamaitepora” which meant “created by the gods” in Tahitian. This was then abbreviated to PoraPora meaning firstborn, referring to the son of King Hiro of Raiatea who had first ruled this island. In the Tahitian language, there is neither letter “B” nor is there a sound equivalent to the “B” sound, so when initially foreign people came to the place they misheard the word and started calling it “Bora Bora” which eventually led the rest of the world to refer it to as Bora Bora.

The native languages spoken in Bora Bora island are French and Tahitian. But the people on the island can also interact with the visitors in English. Tahitian is relatively an easy language to learn with only 16 letters and 1,000 words. Some most common Tahitian words along with the pronunciation in brackets that may be useful for you are: Hello- la Ora na (yo-rahnah), thank you- Mauruuru (mahruh-ru), Yes- E(ay), No- Aita(eyetah),etc.

The official currency of the island is the French Pacific Franc (CFP). One USD is equivalent to approximately 110 CFP. You can use credit cards and US dollars are also widely accepted here.
