Rabi Campaign Be Wise, Sow Wisely

Despite challenges of deficit rainfall in the last two years. Farmers have shown their determination to achieve record Kharif production this year and they are all set to repeat this for forthcoming Rabi season. Rabi campaign 2016 is on now and farmers, with the support of the government’s various schemes, gearing up to achieve bumper production by fixing crop wise target. The government has also advised the farmers to be wise, crop wise.

In May, based on the forecast of a good monsoon, the Centre set a target of producing 270.1 million tonnes of food grains in 2016-17. The government’s target for 2016-17 is 7 percent higher than the 252.2 million tonnes of production estimated for 2015-16, and 2.3 percent higher than India’s record food grain output of 265 million tonnes in 2013-14.

The Monsoon Message

This year South-West monsoon has been quite good. Except few states the rain has been normal or more than normal in most of the states. The sowing of crops has been satisfactory. A good monsoon this year has improved the prospects of rabi crops. Good progress of the monsoon in the later part of the season and late showers in many areas may help improve the moisture content of the soil that would help the rabi crops. Also, better rains after two years of below normal rains have improved the reservoir levels as well.A recent CRISIL report states that the reservoir storages are higher by 17 per cent compared to last year which should support the production this season and the next season as well.

“The monsoon this year has been well distributed with 5.3 million hectare more area planted under food grains (compared to the year before) and we are likely to see a record production of food grains,” says Radha Mohan Singh, Union Agriculture Minister.
