Contrary to popular belief, Tesla was not founded by Elon Musk. Even though Musk has now become synonymous with the electric-car brand, Tesla was actually founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Martin and Marc were the brains behind the technology, and a year later Musk came in as the major investor. However, things didn’t work out well, and so Martin and Marc left Tesla in 2008.
