With the World Health Organisation declaring novel coronavirus a global pandemic, our lives instantly changed. No one was immune, not even race teams. Cancelling the Australian Grand Prix was the right choice. In a game of Mexican standoff, common sense prevailed.
Our technical director Nick Hughes has spent a lot of time in the United States of America with the good ol’ boys of NASCAR. He’s prone to using a saying that has never been more pertinent: “Motor racing is like wiping your arse with a hula hoop, eventually the same shit comes back around.” And so a lot of energy has been expended talking about race formats for our return to racing, that and everything in between.
Things like reverse grids, no pitstops, new cars… So much hot air has been expended that one might suggest new holes in the ozone layer may have developed over north Sydney, Melbourne and south-east Queensland!
