Even good things must eventually come to an end and there were definitely a few tears shed as our long-term ’20 Ford F-250 Super Duty pulled away from our driveway. This truck served us faithfully for more than 25,000 miles and proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that it was deserving of the Truck Trend Pickup Truck of the Year award. The Super Duty spent its time commuting to school, running road trips on the open highway, hauling bed loads of random stuff, running off-road trails, and towing trailers of all shapes and sizes. Basically, it was a big truck that we did big truck stuff with, and it performed every task we threw at it with strength and finesse.
During our final few months with the truck, we decided that it would be fitting to send the truck out the way it started its time with us, by going on an epic road trip. However, this time we opted to hitch up a travel trailer, load the bed with gear, and hit the road for a month-long adventure through the western United States. Our road trip covered 4,700 miles and the Super Duty logged an average of 12.6 mpg while running down the road with a gross combined weight (truck and trailer) of 18,300 pounds. Unsurprisingly, the truck’s intense diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) usage continued, and we had to top off the tank a total of three times, adding 12 gallons, during our trip.
We were also finally able to hitch up a properly large trailer just as our time was running out. To do this, we fitted the F-250 with a 24,000-pound-capable fifth-wheel hitch from Curt Manufacturing, along with the company’s manual slider system built specifically to attach to the Super Duty’s bed puck system. For this testing, we hitched up a 32-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer weighing a touch more than 14,000 pounds. Over the course of 250 miles, the truck averaged 10.4 mpg with the big trailer in tow, but also used almost a quarter of a tank of DEF (according to the gauge).

A long-arm suspension is a great idea for most off-road linked suspension rigs. Many have been built and much time has been spent thinking about doing so. Using a Jeep as an example, many coil-sprung models have relatively short front arms.
