The bravest offroad racers on the planet headed back to Saudi Arabia to face-off at the 43rd Dakar Rally. Pratik Rakshit brings all the details

The planet’s toughest rally headed back to Jeddah for another fortnight of exhilarating off-road action. There are no easy triumphs on the Dakar, but Stéphane Peterhansel took the lead during stage 3 and the fight for the title was whittled down on the following day to a three-way battle between last year’s top 3. The setbacks encountered by Carlos Sainz meant this soon turned into a duel with Toyota Hilux driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah. However, the Frenchman never faltered and his lead increased during the only stage he won this year, three days from the finish. This was sufficient to earn him his 14th title.

After a very impressive debut with a finish just at the foot of the podium in 2016, Kevin Benavides proved his mettle after a nasty fall broke his nose and damaged his ankle. The South American withstood the attacks during a very tense finish, in which Sam Sunderland remained a threat until the end, as did Ricky Brabec. The American ensured the first one-two finish for Honda since Cyril Neveu and Edi Orioli in 1987.

HOW TO SURVIVE an Adventure Ride

I’m no expert endurance rider or a professional fitness instructor, but what I can do is ride my motorcycle continuously for five long days and feel physically content at the end of the trip. So, what can you do to prepare for an upcoming off-road adventure to stay strong, enjoy the ride and be able to dismount at the end of the day without calling friends over to pry you off your bike? TOP 8 TIPS FOR FINISHING THE DAKAR RALLY AS A ROOKIE

This year I competed in and finished The Dakar Rally 2020. I set out to do the seemingly impossible encouraged by Nathan Rafferty, who raced and finished last year’s Dakar as a rookie with the same number (104). An enormous amount of time was spent training to start the race mentally and physically prepared. The race is incredibly challenging, with an estimated attrition rate of around 35% over the course of two weeks. This turned out to be a great year to race, as Americans won both the motorcycle and side-by-side classes for the first time in more than 40 years of the race’s history. I was fortunate to witness these enormous feats and, along the way, learned some important lessons to share with aspiring contenders.
