Precision Tooling Key for Vehicle Development
Auto Tech Review|August 2016

Auto makers today demand a high level of design dexterity and functional flexibility from component manufacturers. Aiding this are CNC machines, which help in creating parts for virtually an entire vehicle through an amalgamation of accuracy and cost efficiency. Companies today can precisely and efficiently produce components and pieces for their automotive products with these machines and also ensure error-free production as there is minimum application of human interface. Micromatic Machine Tools recently collaborated with Exxon Mobil as its lubricant partner for coolant management and operational lubrication. We get you the inside story.

Precision Tooling Key for Vehicle Development

Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machines are widely used today in the automotive industry for multiple application areas. These involve complex machining processes, given the toughness and tensile strength of materials, combined with complex process geometries that are subject to numerous pre-production designing. An efficient CNC machine can help perform these tasks conveniently with accuracy and precision.

Leading the way for CNC applications in the automobile industry is Micromatic Machine Tools Pvt Ltd (MMT), which is the largest manufacturer of machine tools for the auto industry in India. Part of the ₹1,200 cr Ace Micromatic Group, MMT has over two decades of experience in supplying more than 25,000 machines in India and abroad.

MMT recently collaborated with ExxonMobil as its lubricant partner for coolant management and operational lubrication. We met TK Ramesh, CEO, MMT at the company’s tech centre in Gurgaon, which provides MMT customers in the northern zone a glimpse of the company’s various CNC activities, through dummy modules and sampling.

It forms the backbone of a customer support initiative, which provides preorder trials to customers. This centre boasts of six CNC machines capable of performing different tooling tasks, depending upon specific requirements. It informs the customer about the ways and means to enhance tool life, reduce cost per unit and improve precision in designing. Customers thus get a first-hand experience of what to expect of the final product from the company’s manufacturing unit in Bangalore.

Sound Generation For Enhanced Road Safety

With an ever-increasing number of fully electric and hybrid vehicles entering the market, we are witnessing a change in the acoustic experience in and around the car. The silent nature of the electric powertrain means that other road users miss the familiar acoustic cues that warn them of an approaching vehicle. To remedy this situation, Harman is working on various noise management solutions.

OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY CONTRIBUTION OF TODAY'S AUTOMOTIVE HEADLAMPS

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS TOP PRIORITY FOR FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE DEPLOYMENT

Increasing levels of electronic content in vehicles result in a large amount of software that is required to run the scenes behind the mechanical aspects of a vehicle. Electronic systems in automobiles are part of every section, from the powertrain to comfort and convenience systems as well as all types of safety equipment. This makes electronics and the software running these systems a critical part of the equation for future mobility solutions. In addition, putting standards in place to measure methods of developing, testing and functioning of such electronic systems also becomes highly relevant.
