Worlds Apart
Perspective|October2017

Sydney and the French city of Lille are competing to become World Design Capital 2020. What’s in it for the contenders – and is it really worth the time and expense?

William Fraser
Worlds Apart

Lille versus Sydney. An Old World capital with centuries of history versus a brash New Worlder. But Gallic charm set against Aussie rigour aside, both share the kinds of wide-scale challenges facing urban landscapes everywhere – from social, technological and economic issues to demographic and environmental tests. Both cities claim that design is the miracle cure for all ills.

The World Design Organization (WDO), responsible for the World Design Capital (WDC) concept, has nothing if not lofty ideals: that of creating a better living environment for all. It believes design is the underlying solution to the globe’s problems, and a catalyst for positive change, particularly when considering industrial design. Lille and Sydney are hoping to prove the WDO right, by transforming their cities in 2020.
