The family court in Hyderabad receives 4 to 5 petitions every month for divorce on grounds of impotency or frigidity; albeit curiously in an overwhelming number of instances the couple suffer from neither. Family court advocate Anitha Salabh Jain explains: “Nowadays both spouses are working and the impact of their highly stressful jobs is felt even in their personal lives. Soon after an arranged wedding, one of the spouses may not be mentally prepared to consummate the marriage and needs more time to get well acquainted with the partner. This tradition, however, of garvadhara in conservative Hindu families (to consummate the marriage soon after the wedlock) is taking its toll in these couples.” That’s what transpired in the case of A. Rajitha and her husband Rakesh who headed for divorce. “Being forced to get intimate with someone, on the nuptial night is injudicious. The newly weds should first spend some days or even months together to know each other thoroughly and the physical aspect should come automatically,” said Rajitha.

Another techie said: “I was under tremendous pressure with my job and was not feeling relaxed enough to get close to my wife after marriage for the following few days. My wife concluded that I was impotent that has led to the filing of divorce petition.”
