As Gabby helps her grandmother prepare for the Cinco de Mayo festival, a delivery leads to an unexpected connection and new romance

Delicious delivery

Preparing for the annual Cinco de Mayo festival, the chef at Casa Ria busily tended the outdoor grills that sizzled with husked corn, chicken and beef.

The mouthwatering aromas of garlic and chilies wafted past Gabby, while she dressed the last of the patio tables with vibrant red, white and green gingham linens.

“Abuela, everything smells so good,” she remarked to her grandmother, Maria, the restaurant’s owner and namesake. “It’s making me hungry.” Gabby snatched a warm tortilla chip, dunked it in a bowl of Maria’s guacamole and popped it into her mouth with a sigh of pleasure.

“I appreciate your taking off work to help me today,” remarked Maria as she busily husked ears of fresh corn to make elote. Next to her was a large pile of shucked cobs and a bag filled with discarded husks and silks. “I’m happy to. Besides, I’d never miss this. Need any of my help husking the corn?”

“No, gracias. However, I am expecting a delivery. Would you meet the driver to sign for it?”

“Of course.” Gabby snaked her way through the growing crowd as she headed inside the restaurant.

“Gabriella Lopez?” a deep voice called out.

The Mary Tyler Moore SHOW

From That Girl in the 1960s to Ally McBeal in the 1990s to Sex and the City in the 2000s, television has long reflected the shifting image of independent women. Yet the true game-changer came in 1970, when The Mary Tyler Moore Show introduced Mary Richards—30, single, stylish and making her way in a newsroom full of men. Rather than being someone’s wife or daughter, she was the star, and she changed television forever. Join us for a look back at rare behind-the-scenes photos of the groundbreaking show as we celebrate its 55th anniversary.

Happy money, happy holidays

The holidays are here (yay!), and with them comes both joy and, let's be honest, stress. For many of us, the shopping lists, entertaining costs or the ache of an empty chair at the table can dim the sparkle of the season. If that's you, please accept my wishes that the days land lightly.
