The iPhone's next operating system is already looking good.

iOS 17

FaceTime Messages is a long-requested feature that finally arrives with iOS 17. When you call someone on FaceTime and they’re not available, you can leave a message for them, just like you can in the Phone app. This can be a video or an audio message, depending on which type of FaceTime call you make.

Remember those video chat reactions we told you about in macOS Sonoma? They’re coming to iOS 17 too. During FaceTime video calls you can brighten up your feed with Reactions such as hearts, balloons, fireworks, laser beams, rain and more. The new effects can be activated through simple gestures, and third-party video calling apps can take advantage of them as well.

In another exciting FaceTime update, the app is coming to Apple TV 4K. Using Continuity Camera, you can use your iPhone’s camera as a webcam and make FaceTime video calls on your television through Apple TV. You can initiate the call on Apple TV, or start on the iPhone and hand it off to Apple TV. With Centre Stage, users will have perfect framing even as they move around the room.

Get More from Messages

Several improvements have been made to the Messages app. The search function benefits from new Search Filters. You can start a search and then add additional filters to narrow down the results and find exactly what you’re looking for.
