MARINA TO CRACK DOWN ON STEEP HIKES IN SHIPPING RATES

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) on Monday warned shipping companies against imposing excessive fare increases, saying operators that violate the allowable adjustment may face sanctions, including the suspension or revocation of their certificates of public convenience.
In an interview on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon on PTV on March 16, MARINA spokesperson Director Lui Delos Santos explained that the agency only allowed up to a 20-percent increase in passenger fares and cargo freight rates, or fuel surcharge, for domestic shipping operators amid rising global fuel prices.
The agency issued the warning after receiving reports that some shipping companies raised fares beyond the allowable 20 percent, with increases reportedly reaching 50 percent, to as high as 100 percent.
Delos Santos said MARINA has already issued show-cause orders against companies that implemented fare hikes without complying with the required procedures. If proven, the violators may face administrative penalties, including the suspension or cancellation of their operating authority.
