Progress the aim of Pride on city streets

THIS year marks 40 years since the first Pride march took place in Wales.

Recollections vary about how many people took that brave walk down Queen Street in Cardiff city centre, but it was in the tens, not the hundreds, and certainly not the thousands.

When you look at the pictures, what is striking is the number of police who accompanied the marchers.

One of those who walked that day was Francis Brown.

Now in his sixties, he remembers the day, how he felt, and who took part with him, but what is telling is all those who couldn't.

Friends who were bank managers, teachers, police officers, couldn't be out, proudly, because there was no legal protection, but there was bullying and harassment.
