EMILY GRAY talks to North East shopkeepers about the likely effects of the ban on disposable and single-use vapes

Disposable vape ban hitting small businesses hard

THE ban of disposable and single-use vapes came into place across the UK on June 1.

The ban applies to all disposable vapes, irrespective of whether they contain nicotine, and affects all brands including well-known names like Elf Bar and Lost Mary easily recognised for their bright and colourful packaging. The ban prohibits the sale and distribution of single-use vapes - making it illegal for businesses to sell or supply. They are also obliged to clear out all existing stock.

Whilst the general population won't face repercussions for possessing or using disposable vapes, retailers who continue to sell non-compliant vapes after the ban could face fines, product confiscation, and potential legal action. Initially, Trading Standards will impose civil sanctions and shops caught selling could face fines of £200.

The ban is framed as a public health and environment matter - hoped to encourage a shift towards refillable and reusable vaping devices which remain legal post ban. Disposable vapes contribute to electronic waste and contain materials such as lithium, which pose disposal challenges, create fire risks, and threaten wildlife.
