HEXHAM MP CALLS FOR REGISTER OF ICONIC TREES
The Journal
|December 03, 2025
HEXHAM MP Joe Morris has called for a register of landmark plants in law after the Sycamore Gap tree was felled in his constituency.
-
Mr Morris said the crime, which was committed nine months before he became Labour's first ever Hexham MP, “felt like an attack”.
The MP suggested that Sherwood Forest's Major Oak, in Nottingham-shire, could feature on the list; it’s the tree where Robin Hood and his Merry Men are said to have slept. He also named Surrey’s Crowhurst Yew as a contender for heightened protections, to better guard its trunk and canopy which some estimates suggest have been growing for around 4,000 years.
