UK braced for hottest day of the year as well as storm disruption

Weather warnings of disruption from thunderstorms have been issued for the northern parts of the UK, while southern England is braced for a day that is forecast to be the hottest of the year so far.
Temperatures are expected to reach 34C or more in the south-east today. So far the hottest day of the year in the UK is 19 July, when a temperature of 31.9C was recorded at St James's Park in central London.
Such temperatures are usually accompanied by heat health alerts, but yesterday the website of the UK Health Security Agency reported a problem with the service.
A kink in the jet stream, caused by Storm Debby in the US, is pushing hot air northward, which is expected to spark storms. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms today for northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
